Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz: “An oath.”

In reality, the inner content of any oath, whether initiated by oneself or administered by others, is the imparting of strength, the reinforcement of something already existent.

A person decides that he wants something; to strengthen his resolve and infuse it with added significance and force, he takes an oath.

… An oath, then, is an acceptance and reinforcement of some already existing commitment.
