We must draw “out of the wells of salvation” (Isaiah 12:3), penetrate our own depths, figure out what shells of limitation are, or the desire to get by in this or that society– and to seek out what is real.
This is digging for our own soul, finding out where it is.
And wherever our soul is, it can still hear the echoes of the giving of the Torah, and it still says Shema Yisrael, even when it is no longer familiar with the verse.
