The first two of the Ten Commandments-“I am God” and “You shall not have other gods”-comprise the entirety of the Torah.
They are the axis around which the sum total of Jewish life revolves.
Just as every positive commandment expresses the concept that “I am the Lord your God,” that is, unification with the one God, so is every transgression an expression of “you shall not have any other gods” that is, a transgression is paramount to having other gods.
