Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz: "Be a Mentch"

Yesterday on the Global Day website  ( http://www.theglobalday.com/if-you-could-add-an-11th-commandment-what-would-it-be-2/ ) this was the response given by Rabbi Steinsaltz to the question, "If you could add an 11th commandment, what would it be?"

At first glance, the Ten Commandments are just a very short list of laws, seemingly quite easy to follow.

But this is true only if one follows the Commandments in theory, or by telling others about them.

When it comes to real life – when they are not preached but acted upon – they look quite frightening, and seem to be asking people to do too much.

I do not presume to add another one to the first ten commandments.

Keeping the first ten is difficult enough – as anybody who earnestly tries to apply them in practice can attest.

But if I would have the hubris of adding just one, it would be – be a mentch.
